Entry #3: Your Fantasy Scoring System- I Will Never Join a League that Only Awards 4 Points for a Passing TD Because it is Stupid

I hate leagues that only give 4 points per passing TDs.  When Tom Brady throws a passing TD, the Patriots get 6 points.  Why are you only giving him 4 points?  Many will argue that it is “easy” for a QB to throw 2 TDs in a game and it is hard for an RB and WR to score 2 TDs in a game.  Therefore, passing TDs should be lowered because QBs will be overvalued if they get 6 points per passing TD.  That is a ridiculous argument.  A touchdown is a touchdown is a touchdown.  Here is a novel idea: QB’S SHOULD HAVE MORE VALUE THAN EVERY OTHER POSITION.  If someone actually believes that all positions should have equal value, then they should be in a league that gives kickers 6 points per FG because it isn’t easy for kickers to kick 3 FGs in a game.  The reason why nobody would ever do that is because kickers are not as important as the skill positions.  QBs should be rewarded for being important and receive 6 points per passing TD.

I want everybody to remember back to elementary school when you started playing football during recess or after school with your friends.  Who were the two captains?  The two captains were always the two quarterbacks because they were the two most important players on the field. Without a quarterback, your team does not have a chance.  Quarterbacks can carry a football team in real life and they should have that chance in fantasy also.  Passing TDs should be 6 points and quarterbacks should have added value in all fantasy leagues.  Shame on Yahoo and ESPN for perpetuating this idea that 4 points per passing TD is standard.  Does anybody else find it wrong to win a fantasy football championship with a guy like David Garrard as your starting quarterback?  The fact that Tom Brady and Drew Brees and Peyton Manning are going in the 3rd round in some drafts is shameful.  These guys are the most valuable football players in the world and they are being treated like second-class citizens in the fantasy football universe.   Let’s all do the right thing and petition your league commissioner to make passing TDs 6 points.

Entry #2: Derek's Upcoming Teasers - You Can Vote

Derek is going to be pretty busy these next 3 weeks as he got assigned to write his own episode of Friday Night Lights.  Unfortunately for our readers, that means more of my analysis until he has some free time.  He promises to try and write when he needs a break from the script.  Derek has a bunch of possible upcoming articles for this blog.  We need our readers' input.  Please VOTE for the Top Two articles that you would want to read.

1.     "If You're Good"- If You’re Good, You Need to Process Fantasy Football Advice Differently from Other People.
2.     “Ignore Value” – The Importance of Being Confident Enough to Reach for Players in the Draft Especially If You Have a Turnaround Pick
"Exploiting Suspensions" - The Irrational Fear of Missed Playing Time
"Identifying and Anticipating PED Users" - You're an Idiot If You Don't Think it's a Part of Fantasy
3.     "Don't Draft for the Playoffs”- Your Playoffs Are the First 4 Weeks of the Regular Season

If that doesn’t get you excited about this blog, I don’t know what will.  Thanks to Derek for giving this blog some credibility in the near future.

Entry #1: The Birth of Yet Another Fantasy Blog

Why Start a Fantasy Blog?
After contemplating this every August for the last few years, I decided to take the leap.  I am going to start a fantasy football blog.  My wife actually encouraged this which I took as a sure sign that she has either gone crazy or that this is a sign from God.

Fantasy Football has been consuming my thought life for the last 2 weeks.  I posted this on Facebook already but I will remind you that earlier this week, I dreamt about Earl Bennett, the #2 WR on Chicago.  In a preseason game, he caught 3 balls for 59 yards.  This made me really happy inside because I own him in one of my leagues.  I drafted him in round 13 in a 14 team league as my #4 receiver.  Sleeper alert!  In my dream, I assumed that he put up those pedestrian numbers while playing in just one and a half quarters which explains my excitement.  When I woke up in the morning and realized that it was all a dream, I was disappointed.  Yes, I have problems.

What Should You Expect from this Blog?
As the title of this blog suggests, we hope to provide original fantasy football thoughts.  The other day, someone from the draft I just completed wrote on our message board that all I do is regurgitate what Rotoworld says.  I took offense to this. (As stated, I have problems.)  I rely on Rotoworld quite a bit but I want to believe that I use them as a reference and come up with my own conclusions.  With that said, here are the top 3 reasons that you, the reader, should read this fantasy blog:

1.  There will be original thoughts.   With the wealth of fantasy information available online, much of the information is repeated and regurgitated.  We will try to provide insight on factors that fantasy owners often overlook and provide original ideas, conclusions, and predictions.

2.  We will do the research.   As this blog begins, we want to take it seriously We promise to break down film (NFL Network has extended highlights that we can look at a few days after games) AND look at players beyond the final numbers.  For example, before ranking players, we promise to look through last year's game logs for every player and make our own judgments on how valuable they really were.

3.  We are smart.  There are currently 2 writers for this blog, myself and Derek Olson.  Derek is currently a writer for the TV show Friday Night Lights.  He loves football.  He played high school football with Ken Dorsey and was on the receiving end of many of his TD passes.  Derek and I were roommates in college for two years.  We both played and quit football within the first two years.  We apparently like to watch football more than we like getting hit.  We did go to Yale together but were probably the worst students that school has ever known.  We had many discussions about football and sports in general and we continue to talk alot from September through December during football season.  Derek has many more original thoughts about football than I do and will contribute to this blog as much as he can.

After this post, I will read an article about how Earl Bennett and Jay Cutler were best friends in college and developed a special connection that will continue this year in Chicago.
